Lets satire!

Satire is a sort of glass wherein beholders do generally discover everybody's face but their own; which is the chief reason for that kind reception it meets with in the world, and that so very few are offended with it. - Jonathan Swift

Western history, Greeks, Romans, Mughals or even the current generation, one thing which has existed for this long is the art form, Satire. For me it's a necessary evil. I dwell upon satire, for me it is a source of one liners and jokes.

Whether satire affects or not is the question to be asked. Whether it has the capability to effect change? One fundamental problem which I encounter almost everytime with satire is that people who understand the meaning are those intelligent souls who are already in agreement with the criticism which the satire has highlighted but for others it comes across as rude or even something stupid. My use of satire is based upon the premise that how can one hope to point out certain flaws in norms when a certain sect of society is firmly hooked up to them? For many, satire might be irrelevant because of its limited market size apart from the reasons ranging from time to place.

What I believe is that satire these days lacks the seniority of various other art forms in order to make it important. Inspite of all these, satire is amongst those essential elements which builds the freedom of speech and expression. Those who satire i.e. the Satirists, are generally the heralds of a flawless society. It is the satirist who makes us uncover the sins that we commit, umm..yeah!

South Park and Huckleberry Finn are two powerful works of satire and honestly I can't imagine anyone more powerful in the genre of satire. Two things which emerge clearly from these two creative works are - honesty and humanism, which makes these works so valuable and in a way forces readers/viewers to introspect.

I think satire has never been nor will be a major shift changer in the society as it is limited by its kabbalistic nature. Though I don't consider this as a weakness!

Satire is tragedy plus time. You give it enough time, the public, the reviewers will allow you to satirize it. Which is rather ridiculous, when you think about it -Lenny Bruce

  1. very well written. the lines about the limited appeal of satire are very true and deep. loved it man.

being a fellow lover of South Park, I concur that it is among the most powerful and long running satirical works in human history and the best part is that they spare no one and everybody is fair game.
