Movie Review: My Best Friend’s Girlfriend

Poor girl meets rich guy. Enemies become lovers. The tacky lass morphs into a hot chic. A spoiled brat learns responsibility. An initial threat becomes the biggest life-changing opportunity ever. Make-believe turns into reality. Name an old trick, this movie probably has it!

Grace, the working student (Marian Rivera), and Evo, the spoiled brat (Richard Gutierrez), first collide when she dances at a stag party and he steals a kiss from her. They clash and hope to never see each other again. But that doesn’t happen. Grace’s boyfriend, Mark (JC de Vera,) introduces her to his best friend, who turns out to be Evo. Mark leaves for the US and Evo takes advantage of the opportunity to convince Grace to pose as his new girlfriend so that his Ex (Ehra Madrigal) would get jealous. Otherwise, he’ll let Mark know about Grace’s stag party stint. We all know what happens next: They unexpectedly fall in love.

“Love comes in unexpected packages,” says the movie. The irony is that there’s nothing beyond expectation in BFGF, not even love. A hodgepodge mixed plot, mixed-up characters

The first part is funny. The slapstick humor and Chiqui’s lines are entertaining enough. The second part where the couple supposedly develops ..is filled with cliches from movies .

Oh yeah, flirting by smudging something under the rain? Confrontation is a bit confusing– all because the character of Mark seems to have been written to have multiple personality disorder because he’s very inconsistent.
It isn’t just the character of Mark that presents contradictions. Although his is the worst and most crucial, there are problems with the characters of Evo, Grace, Evo’s mom, and Evo’s ex-girlfriend, Akiko. It’s not so clear how Evo was influenced by Grace’s convictions. Grace– is she really dumb or smart? Plus, her English– she had two different patterns of English

Grace finished her MA thesis simply by submitting what seemed to be a 30-page paper in a folder. My Project report is better ..Lol

The number of times Evo and Grace bonded can even be counted by the fingers of your hands. It’s hard to believe that in a short span of time, they fell in love– and that’s supposedly no ordinary love! Perhaps they were charmed by each other so much.

I don’t know if it’s because the characters manage to commit themselves to “true love” that the movie works in spite of all its flaws. The plot is mediocre and superficial but it’s fairly entertaining. I can’t say that it is a bad movie but neither can I say that it’s great . It wasn’t so memorable but it wasn’t a waste of money either. I actually enjoyed watching this flick.
Is it worth watching? It’s okay. If you’re not into romantic comedy, choose a movie like Jumper instead; but if you are a hopeless romantic, this movie would satisfy as a date movie ;)

At last, I found a movie which I can definately delete from my HDD .. hehhee
